Scarlet cried out, slamming into a tree and falling to her knees. I can’t go any further. Her fingers scrambled against the earth and pine needles, useless in her struggle to gain ground.

I’m sorry Wolf. Go on without me. Please.

A howl lit up the night, filled with pain.

        Please, Wolf. I’m sorry I couldn’t save you... I’m sorry I’m dying...

Her breathing slowed, eyelids fluttering. The stars glinted at the edge of her vision, scattered in the spaces between trees.

Heavy breathing neared her, the pungent smell of blood filling her nostrils and making her want to gag.

She opened her eyes, for a split second seeing it in all its horror: matted grey fur, gleaming red eyes, and a small yellow tag behind its right ear. She closed her eyes.

The beast neared her, its wet snout tapping her nose gently.

Take me away. Take me away. Please. Just... kill me...

A flash of white teeth, a snarl, blood spurting and then... nothing.

Wolf looked in through the glass walls, pressure building behind his eyes. It always hurt to see her like this, whether or not the vision was real. Her tears were real, her screams. Every uneven breath, every messy foot fall, every time she lost hope... real. All real.

He watched her wake up against the smooth white floor, having to stop himself from crashing through the glass and holding her, kissing the tears from her face, and reminding her nothing was wrong, nothing was real.

Scarlet touched her face tentatively, finding it wet. She laid down so her side touched the cool floor beneath her, her chest still taking deep breaths.

In. Out. In. Out. You’re alive. You’re alive, and none of that happened. Wolf is alive. In... Out...

Letting out a hysterical laugh, Scarlet curled into herself, playing with a strand of red hair between her fingers.

A shadow fell over her, her own confusion allowing someone to approach her without her knowledge. A girl around her age sat down in front of her, peering at Scarlet through her tightly curled hair.

        “Scarlet. It’s over.”

Scarlet pushed herself onto her elbows, almost groaning with the effort.

“I know. And I failed. Again.”

Winter—by now Scarlet remembered her name—took out a small package. Graceful fingers removed a small white pill and placed it in Scarlet’s hand.

“Swallow it. You have it sit up first, though, and I also brought you some water.”

Winter scooted over to Scarlet, helping her up and supporting her back with her hands. Scarlet finally reached a proper sitting position, though her spine hurt and her lungs still burned from the running.

Winter slid the glass of water closer, picking it up and placing it in Scarlet’s hand.

Scarlet swallowed the pill in one gulp. Her back went rigid and the glass shattered on the floor, Winter pulling away and starting to push the glass pieces together with her feet.

Scarlet’s mind cleared, strength returning to her body. Standing up, she shook her head once and looked around, seeing Wolf to her right.

        “Wolf. I’m sorry.”

He tapped his ear and mouthed, I can’t hear you through the glass, remember?

Scarlet nodded, turning back to Winter.

“You can leave it, I’ll call a droid to do it for you.”

Winter smiled in understanding, stepping back.

        “You were closer this time.”

“I know. But I still failed. I... I don’t know...” Scarlet shook her head. “Whatever. I’m going to go talk to Wolf before I try again.”

Scarlet pushed the door open with a shove, almost stumbling into Wolf when she ran over to him.

Wolf looked down at her for a second, deciding whether to be annoyed, angry, or relieved.

Letting out a short breath, he hugged her, burying his head in her hair.

“I can’t let this continue. I can’t see you like this anymore.”

        “You don’t have to watch.”

Wolf shuddered against her. How was she being so strong like this, when she was so weak in the vision?

“I want to be with you every step of the way. But it hurts me to see you in pain, and I can’t do anything... I feel helpless, Scarlet.”

Scarlet pulled back, her brown eyes filled with something like pity.

“I know. I’m sorry it’s taking me so long to pass this part of the test, when you got it on your third try. I’m sorry you have to watch me. But how else can we fight her? How else will I get strong enough?”

“Maybe you shouldn’t fight,” Wolf said softly, lowering his head. “Maybe you could stay here when we fight her. You’d be safe.”

Scarlet took another step back, the space between them growing.

“I won’t stay back here, not knowing how you’re all doing. I wouldn’t be safe; I’m only safe when you’re safe, because if you die... well, who do I have left?”

Wolf sighed, trying to step closer to her, but she took another one back.

        “Scarlet...”

“It shouldn’t even be a question!” Scarlet’s voice raised, Wolf shrinking back into himself.

“What makes you any better than me? What is it about you that makes you think you can go out and fight, while I say here? I will pass this test, and I will fight. And then we’ll win together, or we’ll lose together. Together.

Scarlet turned her back to Wolf, stalking towards her room, but Winter stepped in front of her holding up a hand.

“Wait, Scarlet, are you going to try again?”

“I...” If she could get it now, Wolf would see he was wrong. Just one more try...

        “Yes. I... yes.”

Wolf looked over at her, green eyes wide.

“But... Scarlet. You already tried five times today.”

“And this will be the last time I try. Ever. I promise.”

Scarlet walked into the white room, closing her eyes as Winter inserted the needle into her arm.

        Ten... nine... eight...

Scarlet let herself smile. It would be over after this test, and then the real training. The real battle.

        Five... four... three... two... one.

Her mind transported her to a cliff overlooking a chasm, trees standing guard behind her.

Cracking her knuckles, she took only a second to think before dashing straight for the forest, away from the edge of the chasm.

This time she knew what to do.

Don't ask me what this is about. I don't know. I was just playing a song on repeat and then... wham. This. I guess it's a little like a Divergent crossover? But really not? I don't even knooowwwwww.

Anyway, this is another Lunar Chronicles fanfic, this time with Scarlet and Wolf. I think I messed up Scarlet, maybe Wolf a little, but that's because it's been some time since I read Scarlet and I'm not used to writing their characters yet. But I'll learn, right? I also think I messed up Winter, but I don't have enough official writing about her to know. XD

Overall, I think this is pretty bad (the emotions! I totally screwed up) but it's better than some of my other writing, so... Plus, I needed to post something. :faint:

Hm, they just keep getting shorter and shorter, don't they? *sighhh*
